'Spending' Hunker tokens

If you have a Hunker token, are targeted by an attack and gain an extra defense die, is that Hunker token 'spent' and removed or do you keep it until you become engaged or activate the unit in question?

Hunker tokens are not spent when defending against a ranged attack. They remain until a rule removes them.
