Fragmentation Grenades - different questions!

The upgrade card 'Fragmentation Grenade' text states: While this weapon is in your attack pool gain  "surge : critical"

Does this mean when using the grenades i.e. it is equipped and unit is attacking at Range 1 they gain "surge : critical"

or if the card is equipped you gain "surge : critical"

I assume the former as I don't know a means to remove upgrades and because otherwise all the squads weapons would then potentially gain "surge : critical"

Hey there, 

At least one miniature in the unit has to select the grenade when attacking for the unit to gain the surge:crit effect. If you don’t select it, it is not in your attack pool
