Legal models for tournament play.

Recommended Posts

Hello there!

FIRST: (edit if necessary) not sure if this is a "rules" question, but we are restarting a lot of competitive play in Spain and we are having some problems with legal models.

Tournament regulations state that:

"Players may use only official STAR WARS: LEGION components in tournament play" LEGAL PRODUCTS, Page 6.

"Players are welcome and encouraged to personalize their army according to the following rules:
• Players may paint their miniatures and official terrain products. They cannot modify a mini or official terrain in any way that would create significant confusion about which unit or terrain type the mini or terrain product represents.

• Players cannot modify minis or use bases to significantly alter their size, height, or shape. The Head Judge is responsible for determining the legality of any miniature modifications." COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS, Page 5

Rules also ask you to have official cards (units, upgrades) to play, but you can find promo cards from tournament kits, other language cards from multi-language expansions, etc.

Also, some players argue that if they have official models they can use it for representing other units.

Combining those situations, and again being in official competitive play, which of those modifications would be legal?

E1 - Rebel Troopers painted in white/snow colors, using them as Rebel Veterans with a Rebel Veterans card.

E2 - Stormtroopers painted in black, using them as Death Troopers with a promo Death Troopers card.

E3 - Phase I clone troopers with Phase II helmets from an ARC expansion, using them as Phase II with a promo Phase II card.

E4 - Using Rebel troopers with a modified MPL with a longer gun, counting as a Rebel Commandos Strike Team with sniper, having a promo unit card and upgrade.

Thank you very much!

Hello, Mandaluri! Thank you for your patience while we put together an official answer to your question.

There are three points that I want to stress that form the basis for my answer and the rules found in the tournament regulations.

  1. Players must use official Star Wars: Legion minis.
  2. Those minis can be modified but must clearly represent the original minis the are being used as.
  3. The tournament organizer makes the final determination of whether the rule above is being followed, and should strive to apply this consistently across tournaments.

With those rules in mind, here are my responses to your specific questions:

E1 - Rebel Troopers painted in white/snow colors, using them as Rebel Veterans with a Rebel Veterans card. – No. By merely being painted white, these minis are not distinguishable as different from Rebel Trooper minis. However, if these minis were modified, to physically represent Rebel Veterans, this would be acceptable.

E2 - Stormtroopers painted in black, using them as Death Troopers with a promo Death Troopers card. – No. As above, merely painting these minis black does not distinguish them from Stormtrooper minis. However, if these minis were modified, to physically represent Death Troopers, this would be acceptable.

E3 - Phase I clone troopers with Phase II helmets from an ARC expansion, using them as Phase II with a promo Phase II card. – Yes, this is acceptable, as these minis physically represent Phase II clone troopers.

E4 - Using Rebel troopers with a modified MPL with a longer gun, counting as a Rebel Commandos Strike Team with sniper, having a promo unit card and upgrade. – Possibly. If the minis, and not just the gun, were modified to physically represent Rebel Commando minis, this would be acceptable.
