Can thane Kyrell, x wing pilot, use his ability only during the modify attack step or during the whole attack steps? 

 

like after the cards are dealt but before the aftermath step? 😃

Thane Kyrell's (T-65 X-Wing) pilot ability allows him to spend 1 Focus, hit, or ciritcal hit result to look at the defender’s facedown damage cards, choose 1, and expose it.

As spending a die result is a dice modification this would happen in the Modify Attack Dice step of an attack (step 2b).
