R1-J5 & Thane / Zertik

How does R1-J5's ability interact with Thane Kyrell and Zertik Strom? Specifically, Thane and Zertik says "you may spend x to [look at and] expose" a damage card. R1-J5 says that when you would expose, you may look and choose another card instead. 

Can R1-J5 choose a different card than the one Thane picks? Can R1-J5 choose a card off of a Zertik trigger?

Yes.

With Thane Kyrell:

The Thane Kyrell player gets to look at the opponents damage cards and choose one.  Then before it is exposed, the R1-J5 player can look at their facedown damage cards and choose which card to expose.

With Zertik Strom:
The Zertik Strom player spends their lock for the effect to cause the ship to expose a card. Before the card is exposed, the Fireball player can look at their facedown damage cards and choose which card to expose.
