Assigning wounds with blocked line of sight

If during a ranged attack, the defending unit leader is the only visible mini, is the that mini assigned the wounds and removed or would the wounds be assigned to a mini that the attacking unit does not have line of sight to?

The defending player chooses where to assign wounds. In the situation you described, the defender would have to assign any wounds to other miniatures not in LOS, since a unit leader may not be assigned wounds unless it is the last miniature in a unit. 

Remember: "When a unit suffers wounds from an attack, if the attacker has LOS to only some of the miniatures in the defending unit, the defending unit cannot suffer wounds greater than the total wound threshold of miniatures that are in LOS." So if the unit leader is the only visible miniature and has a wound threshold of 1, the unit only suffers 1 wound which must be assigned to another miniature in the unit, even if it is not in LOS (since leaders may not be assigned wounds unless they are the only miniature in the unit)
