Cover determination

In Determine Number of Obscured Miniatures, it states that the attacking player checks LoS from the attacking unit leader’s silhouette.  Does this mean:

1- The attacking player picks a point to determine cover from on their silhouette and determines everything from that point or,

2- the attacking player checks LoS from the entirety of their unit leader’s silhouette and if the enemy gets enough obscurement to gain cover from any point, then the target gains cover
