Ion Weapons and Midnight

Midnight's ability reads

While you defend or perform an attack, if you have a lock on the enemy ship, that ship's dice cannot be modified.

and Ion Cannon reads

Quote

Attack: If this attack hits, spend 1 <hit> or <crit> result to cause the defender to suffer 1 <hit> damage. All remaining <hit> / <crit> results inflict ion tokens instead of damage.

 

If there is one uncancelled hit coming in from an Ion Cannon on an attacker that Midnight has locked, what happens? As spending results is a dice modification, is that step skipped and ion tokens dealt instead?

As spending is defined as a dice modification, that step is skipped and all remaining <hit>/<crit> results inflict Ion tokens instead of damage.

So in this scenario where there is one uncancelled hit from an Ion Cannon attack by an attacker Midnight has locked, midnight would gain one ion token and take no damage.
