Deployment edge limitations

It has been pointed out that the rulebook does not explicitly stated that players must deploy on opposite board edges. Must players deploy opposite each other or can they deploy on any board edge even if that places them adjacent or on the same side as their opponent? -
The rulebook specifies that only the provided tools may be used to measure distance but a line laser to check for los and cover helps speed up the game significantly (especially in those edge cases where base edge to base edge might intersect the corner or terrain etc). Since it is not a distance measurement, would we be allowed to make use of a line laser to determine LoS/cover?
