Spending surges on the experimental droid force commander

My understanding is the surges you spend for the abilities is only the 3 granted to the unit card at the start of the turn, but the battleforce text itself states you can spend surges on the chosen commander. 

 

Can we clarify if this is any surges, or just the 3 from the battleforce ability

Hello,

Units may only spend surge tokens on the commander's unit card for the special rules of the Experimental Droids Battle Force - these are the three placed on the unit card at the start of each turn.
