What does ‘cancel’ a hit mean?

When a hit is ‘cancelled’, eg cover or dodge, is the dice removed from the attack pool?  Or turned to a blank facing?

A clarification to the question.  Dodge says “cancel hits and remove dice”.  But Cover says “cancel hits”; it does not mention removing dice

Canceled dice are removed from the pool, as stated in the Apply Dodge and Cover entry. They are not modified to a different die facing.

Canceling hits functions the same in both instances; the definition of "cancel" is given in the first step (Apply Dodge).
