Resistance Astromech M9-G8 and Rebel Pilot Han Solo Interaction

Recommended Posts

How do Resistance Astromech M9-G8 and Rebel Pilot Han Solo interact with each other? The abilities read as follows:

M9-G8: While a ship you are locking performs an attack, you may choose 1 attack die. If you do, the attacker rerolls that die.

Han Solo: After you roll dice, if you are at range 0-1 of an obstacle, you may reroll all of your dice. This does not count as rerolling for the purpose of other effects.

The scenario is as follows: The ship carrying M9-G8 has a lock on Han Solo, Han Solo is at range 1 of an obstacle, and Han Solo performs an attack. Because of the attack tree the defending player modifies the attack dice first. So using M9-G8 the defending player rerolls one of Han Solo's attack dice. If Han Solo first rerolled all the dice using his ability and has a lock on the defender, what dice can he use that lock to reroll?

The Golden Rules state (RRG V1.4.5) state that dice cannot be rerolled more than once. But Han’s ability doesn’t count as rerolling for the purpose of other effects so this makes it a little more tricky. The sequence would be as follows

1) Han rolls attack dice
2) Defender then uses M9G8 to have Han reroll one of his dice. We will call that Die A.
3) Han then decides to use his ability to reroll all dice, including Die A.
4) Han still isn’t happy with it so decides to reroll some of his attack dice using a lock. In this situation he is able to reroll all of his dice EXCEPT Die A, as it had already been rerolled due to M9G8.

So in the situation where M9G8 is being used on a ship which has a lock on the defender it would be best practice to re-roll this die separately and keep it seperate so that players won’t try and reroll it for a second time.
